Kiss Me, Kate

http://www.vogue.com/magazine/article/kate-moss-kiss-me-kate/

I have a confession to make. In the beginning, I did not understand the Kate Moss phenomenon. Call me old-fashioned, but after a decade of Amazonian supermodels pulsing with glamorous, bosomy life, I simply didn’t understand the Piaf-bodied waif with the wan, faraway look in her eyes, nor the Corinne Day and Nigel Shafran photographs that set her adrift in bleak welfare apartments or on gray English beaches.

And then I saw her across a crowded room at a fashion party in Notting Hill, and I was stopped dead in my tracks by her laughing beauty and preternatural elegance. (“I never did a hairy armpit,” says Kate firmly of those late-eighties grunge moments. “You can look dirty, but you can’t be dirty!”) The simple fact is that Kate is irresistible. There is vulnerability and there is strength, and when she turns on the klieg light of her flirtatious, giggly life force, it is impossible not to fall just a little bit in love. And Kate’s conquests are legion. A pantheon of illustrious cultural figures who define our age have fallen under her spell—including designers John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, Gianni Versace, and Dame Vivienne Westwood; photographers Mario Testino, Annie Leibovitz, and François-Marie Banier; and artists Marc Quinn, Banksy, and Lucian Freud—not to mention a slew of high-profile paramours who have run the gamut from the courtly and urbane to the mad, bad, and frankly dangerous to know.

Friends close to the supermodel say they never thought the wild child of fashion would meet her match, but it seems The Kills’ frontman Jamie Hince, 42, has given her a reason to settle down.

“He is perfect for her, he lets her be herself and doesn’t crowd her at all,” says a source close to Moss. “In Jamie she has found the perfect soul mate and their wedding will encapsulate everything that makes her the unique and wonderful person she is.”

There is no doubt her nuptials are set to be the biggest event ever held in the tiny village of Little Farringdon, in Oxfordshire, England, where she owns a 10-bedroom home.

The supermodel is planning a three day extravaganza which has been nicknamed Moss-stock after the infamous Woodstock Festival in 1969, in the US.

A source told the UK’s The Sun newspaper: “She wants it to be a party to remember and like a small festival. It’s a no expense spared do, though most of her budget will probably go on booze.”

Two top chefs will be on hand to provide food for the event and an army of waiters will serve up the sausage rolls and breadsticks.

A close friend of the fashionista says she has pulled in all her showbiz heroes’ favourite recipes to serve to the guests: “She is going to be serving Keith Richards’ shepherd’s pie, Steve Tyler’s thai curry and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie’s sausage and mash.

“And her cocktails have been inspired by her favourite hotel, the Jamaica Inn in the Caribbean.”

Meanwhile, to guarantee a “festival vibe” Moss, 37, has had a series of marquees erected in her garden, which will be decked out in a variety of themes.

One will be based on the Groucho Club, her favourite London members’ lounge, with leather sofas, wooden furniture, dark panelling and flowers.

In case anyone forgets just what she is famous for, the supermodel is hanging pictures of herself taken through her career, and has commissioned bespoke bunting made up of skulls, flowers, headlines of her escapades, flowers and photos.

She has also reportedly approached several bands to play at the wedding reception – Gossip singer Beth Ditto and the Rolling Stones are on her wish list, as is Snoop Dogg.

To add a touch of class, Moss, who has also dated Johnny Depp and Pete Doherty, has signed up Dame Shirley Bassey to perform.

There will even be a dressing up room, with a range of vintage Ozzy Clarke dresses for her mates to wear.

As to Moss’s wedding dress, insiders say controversial designer John Galliano is working on her gown in an atelier in New York, despite standing trial in France last week.

Her eight-year-old daughter Lila-Grace will be bridesmaid and former boyfriend Jefferson Hack is also making an appearance at the wedding.

Naomi Campbell, 40, is also rumoured to be assisting the bride-to-be.

Other guests, include actress Samantha Morton, designer Sadie Frost and Jade Jagger.

So will marriage finally slow down Moss’ partying ways? Her father Peter doesn’t seem to think so.

“Marriage won’t tame my Kate,” he says. “She’ll still like a good party, as does Jamie, but she’s matured now.”
